“A Debt Paid” — “Our freedom, our democracy, has never been easy. Sometimes we stumble; we make mistakes; we get frustrated or discouraged,” an excerpt from President Obama’s speech is one of the things 65 year old Ronald Smith pointed to as the reason he now has his own apartment. As a Vietnam veteran, Smith said that he was transferred from a shelter in Brooklyn and placed in his own apartment in the Bronx. “I went to hell in 1968 and spent 13 months there. I gave out boots, guns, pants, shirts, bags, and everything. I struggled all my life but I have never given up. I was in the Supply and Transportation section,” the ex soldier recalled. “Obama is trying to look out for us,” he continued.
The 65 year old man walked with a limp and rolled up his sleeve to reveal a hospital band on his right wrist. He said that he has been suffering from back spasms ever since he was hit by an MTA bus. “What was it like in the shelter? Give me one word you would use to describe it,” I asked.
“Miserable,” he replied shaking his head.
Smith said that he was forced to move to a shelter after his mother passed away in 2012. “You cannot leave anything lying around. You cannot go to the bathroom because when you return, your stuff is gone.”
“I am happy to be where I am now. Obama is taking care of the vets. By me being a veteran they gave it to me.” #oggl_ ig #blackportraiture #bedstuyportrait #brooklynportrait #brooklynphotography #streetportrait #streetphotography #igers #instamood #picoftheday #documentary #iphoneonly (at Platinum image)
