#kedesha While I think having in most cases is better than not having, there is an interesting argument when one examines the two — the “haves” and the “have nots.” In other words, the inescapable wrinkle they dubbed inequality.
I photographed Kedesha briefly on my recent trip to Jamaica. She was growing up in a fishing village and her house literally sits on the water. She is in the warm Caribbean sea practically every day, she does not have electricity so there is no access to Wii. There is little to eat so she does not have an obesity issue. Kedesha has a few choices in her wardrobe so she does not take forever to get dress. Her ankles and foot bottom are strong from running around barefooted. And although many would argue that she might be so fortunate not to have all the achievements and assurances of the quote and quote “good life” the one door that I thought would be open to her had very rusted hinges. With a few weeks to go, she was not prepared for the upcoming school year. The high cost if books, uniform and shoes was a common conversation between her father and I.
It’s the vicious cycle of poverty, inequality and control that exist in my city of Montego Bay. Those on the upper tier feeling the push of the bottom instigate their own systems that will expand and maintain the gap between them and the poor. The rich will always implement ways to make them more money in an economy dominated by “things.” It is sad that education is being used as a tool to keep poor people underfoot. #portrait #photography #photojournalism #povertyseries #documentary #reportage #relevanceseries #igers #instahub #instagood #instamood #instagrid #instagramhub #webstagram #bestoftheday #picoftheday #streetportrait #streetphotography #nikon #harveybeach (at Harvey Beach)
